Getting ready for Hacktoberfest

Getting ready for Hacktoberfest

October is coming and it's the month of Hacktoberfest! An amazing opportunity to contribute to open-source projects. This article aims to explain what Hacktoberfest is and how to get started.

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open-source software. It is organized by DigitalOcean in collaboration with Intel and DEV . It is an event of learning about and sharing open-source projects, engaging with open-source communities, leveling up your skills while contributing to open-source. Hacktoberfest happens annually and this is the 7th edition! I'm sure you are eager about how to participate. Here's how with some cool tips.

Participating in Hacktoberfest

First, you have to sign-up at the Hacktoberfest site to participate. Interestingly you can get a limited tee or tree donation reward. To qualify, you must register and make four(4) pull requests between October 1-31.

The Pull Requests can be on any public repositories on Github and not just the ones with issues labeled Hacktoberfest.

A great tip for contributing is to focus on quality and not quantity. You can check the Hacktoberfest's quality standards for more information.

Also, don't be scared if you are new to tech or open-source contributions. Hacktoberfest got you covered by gathering together some amazing resources and help:

Hacktoberfest is open to everyone in our global community. Whether you’re new to development, a student, long-time contributor, event host, or company of any size, you can help drive the growth of open source and make positive contributions to an ever-growing community. All backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to complete the challenge.

You can also participate in Hacktoberfest as a maintainer of an open-source project. Check the Hacktoberfest site for recommendations for creating a good Hacktoberfest issue in your project.

There will be an official DigitalOcean Hacktoberfest kick-off celebration on Thursday 1st October 11:00 am to 2:00 pm UTC +05. The event will be hosted online, you can register to attend here.

You can also join the Hacktoberfest Discord channel to converse with other participants, ask questions, and share projects you are passionate about.

Hacktoberfest is for everyone, developers, designers, technical writers. Everyone can contribute!

Here's an awesome tip to find issues on Github. Navigate to the search area and type: label:hacktoberfest no:assignee. This will help filter all issues with labels Hacktoberfest that have not been assigned to anyone.

I really can't wait for October to start hacking down all those issues.
